Traditional drawing

I don't think I've created a finalized, realistic pencil drawing in a couple years. This was done for a project in class. We were to use only a graphite pencil to draw on any type of paper. I wanted to experiment with tracing paper and layering effects. Some shadows and lines were drawn underneath to either emphasize tones or to dull them down. I could have continued to work on this piece but I gave myself a 10 hour time limit to complete this project, otherwise I would have probably overworked it to death.

Schoolism

I took a Schoolism class last year with Stephen Silver in Character Design. Ever since the class, I feel my work has developed immensely. I went onto Silver's site the other day and found a couple of my video critiques under his Schoolism page. Thought it was neat so wanted to share it with yall. Line drawing + negative space

I was inspired by a couple things with these pieces. I found my pose funny as I continued to walk, hunched over in order to drink my coffee while trying to avoid spilling it onto my clothes. I was also inspired by William Steig's, "The Lonely Ones." I was looking through The Steig Album, and was attracted to his simple line drawings of characters.

Gun Rights, Gay Rights, Hippies, and Cowboys

Here's some work I made for the 2009 CCACA (California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts) Conference. The work is titled, "This Place Ain't Big Enough for the Two of Us." This is a piece on stereotypes, with two states rivals, a California Hippie and a Texas Cowboy. Dealing with stereotypes, the Californian stands on the state of California, in hippie attire, armed with a rainbow, as the Texan stands on Texas, in full cowboy gear, with a gun in hand. Each figure stands about 1 ft. high.

Here's my latest paper cut-out project. The background is paint with the foreground made of paper. I can't say I'm completely satisfied with the piece quite yet, however it's a nice first pass.

SANDRO CLEUZO'S

Often, I will find a drawing I like, usually one with great negative space with a pose such as the bottom image, and try to redraw the pose with one of my characters. The top image is mine and the bottom sketch is Sandro Cleuzo's.

Don't have much work to post lately, but here is a clue to what I'm working on/with right now. More to come later.

Gesture drawing

Here are a couple quick gesture drawings. I wanted to show my process in creating an image from references. After finding an image, I first try to find the line of action. The line of action in this baseball batter is a diagonal line from the player's head to foot, as drawn in red in the third image. After laying down that line, I find the point of focus. In this image, the baseball seems to be the focal point, with the player's leg, arms, and eyes all directed towards the baseball, shown in the second image. After finding these key components, I began to draw the figure, starting with shapes, and adding details later. During this time, I try to push and pull some of the character's features. With a little bit of color, the image finally comes to life.

Shirt Design

I was finally able to see one of my shirt designs in print. This one was done for Edgi Clothing in a collaboration with Charity: Water, a non-profit organization bringing in clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. My job was to squeeze in the text, "U+G -> H2O, drink, bathe, survive, You, Generosity", along with a water image, into a t-shirt. Here is the design, and the final product.
